The M11 is the road that connects London to the brainpower of Cambridge, serving what has become one of the most economically dynamic corridors in Britain. The 50-mile motorway runs north-east from the Redbridge area of east London through the Essex and Cambridgeshire countryside, passing close to Stansted Airport and arriving at the southern edge of Cambridge where the university city's technology and biotech clusters — collectively known as Silicon Fen — have created a concentration of wealth and innovation that rivals anywhere in Europe outside London.

The southern end of the M11 begins at Junction 4 in Redbridge, where it peels away from the A406 North Circular. The first few miles run through the fringes of Epping Forest, and the contrast between the dense urban surroundings and the ancient woodland pressing close to the carriageway is striking. Junction 6 at the M25 interchange is the motorway's primary bottleneck — morning traffic from Essex and east London converges here with M25 orbital traffic in a merge that regularly creates queues stretching back several miles on the M11. Smart motorway technology has been deployed on sections near the M25, but the fundamental problem of too many vehicles for too few lanes persists.

North of the M25, the M11 enters more open countryside. The Harlow and Bishop's Stortford area is characterised by gently rolling Essex farmland, and Junction 8 provides the main road access to London Stansted Airport. Airport traffic creates distinctive peaks that do not align with normal commuter patterns — early morning surges for dawn flights, late-night returns, and unpredictable waves of seasonal holiday traffic. Birchanger Green services near Stansted is the only service station on the entire M11, and its monopoly position means it gets extremely busy. North of Stansted, the motorway crosses into Cambridgeshire and the landscape flattens into the chalky farmland of the East Anglian heights. Crosswinds become a factor on these open stretches, and the final approach to Cambridge through Trumpington and past the Girton interchange is often congested with university-related traffic, technology park commuters, and A14 freight flows converging at the same point.
